Painting at the Brink of Death 2
Simon Birch, figurative oil painting 2008
Simon Birch's exploration of pigments in such a pure and simplistic form is inviting for the viewer. After taking a look at some of Birch's work he doesnt explore into much diversity in his work but the passion put into each piece is obvious and stands alone. We are drawn to recognize that the initial image is of a males face but the movement that the figure implies is intriguing, challenging us to imagine beyond the canvas.
He experiments with many variations of light and dark colors that inform with intensity. The balances of pigments and textures is great for representing the form. The way that you can see the previous form post movement shows incredible tensions pulling the viewer forward with the figure. The high contrast in colors works well for informing but serves intensity. This piece is great because of how dramatic the outcome is to such a simple idea put forth.
