Mining the Museum: Marina and Chuck

Given the assignment of taking 3 works from the MIA and mixing them to form one exhibit; Chuck and I choseFrank Gehry's "Ribbon Chair", Lai Sung's "The Ship Fleetwing", and Egon Schiele's "Portrait of Paris von Gutersloh".

The "Ribbon Chair" by Frank Gehry is breathtaking. It's sleek and modern with a warm honey color that contrasts the usual cool tones you see in contemporary architecture. We chose "The Ship Fleetwing" to the left of it, because it is calming and serene but at the same time it commands a lot of respect. It's a very powerful pai
nting and works well with the strong curving lines of the "Ribbon Chair". To the right is the "Portrait of Paris von Gutersloh" because of
the gestural quality to the painting. It has a lot of energy and excitement to it which plays off of the serene ship scene to the left.

  1. Interesting juxtaposition of objects here. (and a lovely illustration of the combined works...) How could you take the viewer beyond a content based entirely on form?

  2. This piece, as Marina has alluded to in our blog, has a lot of feeling emphasized in it. It brings an ambiance to the space that's interesting and somewhat peaceful. The illustration makes for a perfect scene. The space feels almost like an interior design rather than an installation. (Hmmm..are those the same thing?)
